People’s Liberation Army says it is ready to make strong moves for peaceful reunification with Taiwan

The People’s Liberation Army is ready to take the strongest steps for the peaceful reunification of China and Taiwan, Chinese military spokesman Pan Qinghua said on June 3 at the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum.

China seeks dialog rather than confrontation, partnerships rather than alliances, a win-win solution for all rather than a zero-sum game, he said. Pan Qinghua questioned the legitimacy of any international decision if it is against national interests.

Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun said at the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum that anyone who dares to separate Taiwan from China will only achieve their own destruction.

On May 20, the inauguration of Taiwan’s new president, Lai Tsingde, took place. China expressed its dissatisfaction with the separatist position of the new leader of the island.

On May 23-24, the Chinese army and navy held major exercises near Taiwan. They practiced establishing control over the war zone, the Chinese military said.

The exercises were also described as a signal to separatists on the island and supporters of Taiwan independence, as well as to third forces seeking to intervene in the Taiwan Strait.
