Brazil withdraws its ambassador to Israel over the Gaza war

02.06.2024, Israel.

The Brazilian government announced the official recall of its ambassador to Israel in an official gazette last Wednesday, All Israel reports on June 2.

The decision comes after months of tension between the two countries over Israel’s actions in the Gaza war.

Speaking earlier at the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, the Brazilian president said, “What is happening in the Gaza Strip is not war, it is genocide. It is not a war of soldiers against soldiers. It is a war between a well-trained army and women and children.

What is happening in the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian people has not happened at any other moment in history, except when Hitler decided to exterminate the Jews,” he added.

Following the Brazilian president’s comments, Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz summoned Brazilian Ambassador Frederico Mayer to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Center in Jerusalem to be reprimanded.

Comparing Israel’s just war against Hamas to the atrocities of Hitler and the Nazis is a disgrace and a serious act of anti-Semitism,” Katz said.

The Brazilian ambassador was then ordered by presidential decision to return to Brazil, leaving the embassy in Israel under a chargé d’affaires ad interim.

A Brazilian foreign ministry spokesman told the Associated Press that Meier’s official dismissal came in response to Katz’s remarks.
