Venezuela does not want EU observers at presidential elections

29.05.2024, Caracas.

The invitation for EU observers to Venezuela’s presidential election has been withdrawn, Venezuela’s National Electoral Council chairman Elvis Amoroso said on May 28, Venezolana de Televisión TV channel informed.

The elections on July 28 will be held without European observers. The National Electoral Council chairman specified that this decision was due to the “colonial policy” of the European Union. It is also related to “unilateral restrictive measures” against Venezuela.

“The sanctions prevent access to medicines, food, education, sports and the economy,” Amoroso said at a press conference broadcast by the TV channel, noting that such unilateral measures violate “the principles of economic freedom.”

Amoroso emphasized that this decision “was made on the basis of sovereign law and in the interest of the people.” He then recalled the “incalculable financial damage” faced by Venezuela because of the sanctions.

On May 13, Amoroso demanded the complete lifting of all unilateral restrictive measures against Venezuela in response to the European Union’s decision to lift personal sanctions against him personally and against members of the country’s National Electoral Council.
