Lukashenko signs law suspending Belarus’ participation in CFE Treaty

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko signed the law, according to which Belarus suspends its participation in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), the Belarusian portal of legal information informed on May 29.

“Suspend the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe of November 19, 1990,” reads the text of the adopted law.

On November 7, 2023, the Russian Foreign Ministry said, “At 00:00 hours on November 7, 2023, the procedure provided for in the CFE Treaty for Russia’s withdrawal from this Treaty was completed.”

On November 7, 2023, NATO countries issued a statement on the suspension of their participation in the CFE Treaty, “Allied States Parties intend to suspend the operation of the CFE Treaty for as long as necessary, in accordance with their rights under international law. This is a decision fully supported by all NATO Allies.”
