The recent activities of Somali pirates, who have not been heard of in the last 10 years, may indicate Turkey’s desire to acquire an analog of the Houthis, according to the report from the theater of war, published in The Essence of Time newspaper, issue 579.
Africanews reported in the second half of March that Somali pirates, who have been inactive for the past 10 years, are once again threatening shipping in the Horn of Africa.
Since November 2023, pirates have made 20 attempts to hijack ships off the coast of Somalia. It is noted that the increased threat from Somali pirates is superimposed on the actions of the Yemeni Houthis, which further complicates navigation in this area of the world’s oceans.
“It seems that, following Iran, Turkey has decided to acquire an analog of the Houthis: Ankara will blackmail the EU by regulating the attacks of Somali pirates and at the same time imitating vigorous activity to combat them. It is not excluded that the Turkish security services fuel the Somali pirates’ activity.
Another point: the Turks need to demonstrate to the USA that by providing security in Somali waters, Turkey serves the interests of the West. Therefore, the West should only welcome Turkey’s strengthening in Somalia and Djibouti. Ankara will try to insure itself against the EU’s attempts to oust the Turks from the Horn of Africa. Thus, Turkey’s military presence in strategically important regions on the African coast is secured.
And now it would be difficult for Arabs to clean the coast from pirates ‘with rusty AKs’ because they would need to get Ankara’s consent for all this. So thanks to the pirates, the Turks will try to raise their weight in the Arab world as well,” The Essence of Time editorial reads.
