The subsonic Kh-101 missiles with flares, which are believed to have been used in the March 22 strike on the Dnepr hydroelectric power plant, cannot be shot down with the help of Ukraine’s existing air defense systems, Russian military expert Aleksey Leonkov told RIA Novosti on March 22.
Flares mimic the heat signature of a missile, confusing the infrared guidance heads of anti-aircraft missiles.
According to Leonkov, this is the first time that missiles with flares have been used during the special operation in Ukraine.
The March 22 strike targeted the energy infrastructure that Kiev was going to use to prepare for an offensive.
The expert added that Europe helped Ukraine to restore thermal power plants, but Russia “corrected” this situation a bit.
