The UN International Court of Justice orders Israel to prevent genocide in the Gaza Strip

26.01.2024, The USA.

The United Nations International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered the prevention of genocide in the Gaza Strip, the UN ICJ press office reported on January 26.

Presiding UN Judge Joan Donoghue said Israel is obliged to comply with the second article of the Genocide Convention.

Judge Donoghue read out the paragraphs from the Convention that Israel must comply with: “to prevent … (a) the killing of members of a group, (b) the infliction of serious bodily or mental harm on members of such a group, (c) the deliberate infliction on a group of conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.

On December 29, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel with the UN ICJ demanding compliance with the Genocide Convention over the situation in the Gaza Strip.

On January 11-12, the first meeting of the UN ICJ took place, at which South Africa called on the court to issue a ruling obliging it to stop the hostilities in Gaza and to provide the residents with humanitarian aid, in particular, the passage of food supplies and the flow of water into Gaza without restrictions.

Israel denies the South African accusations, saying it is not obstructing humanitarian aid access and refuses to halt the military operation in the Gaza Strip.
