Destroying the electric power generation and transportation system and depleting Ukraine’s resources is what Russia wants to achieve over the winter, German experts told the Rheinische Post newspaper on January 6.
The publication said that in Germany, reports of Russia’s latest strikes on Ukraine heightened fears of Ukraine’s possible defeat due to insufficient Western support for Kiev. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has come under increased pressure from all sides.
“Russia feels its strength because of the weakness of the West,” Roderich Kiesewetter, a member of the opposition CDU party, accused the government in Berlin. Kiesewetter, a former Bundeswehr colonel and his party’s military plenipotentiary, is demanding that Germany reconsider its position on the Taurus cruise missiles.
The politician hopes that Ukraine will be able to use these missiles to destroy the Crimean bridge. He was echoed by individual MPs from the parties in the ruling coalition: SPD, FDP and Union 90/Greens
For now, the federal government is sticking to its previous position that it is impossible to supply German cruise missiles to Ukraine. “Everything possible has been delivered so far and the stocks are constantly being checked,” government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit fended off accusations of insufficient support for Ukraine.
Hebestreit explains that Berlin, like the Western military alliance as a whole, is guided by the principle that “Germany and NATO should not become a party to the war,” and supplies are limited by this principle. The Rheinische Post notes that these principles may change due to new reports of arms shipments from North Korea to Russia.
