The expansion and increase in production capacity of the Russian military-industrial complex under sanctions came as a surprise to the West, Major General Christian Freuding, head of the Situation Center Ukraine at the German Defense Ministry, told the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper on December 29.
“We did not realize that they [Russia – Rossa Primavera News Agency] would succeed in what we are now clearly witnessing: the ramp-up of the military-industrial complex, its expansion and increase in production capacity despite the draconian sanctions regime,” the German newspaper quoted the general as saying.
According to Freuding, the West did not believe in Russia’s ability to withstand the Ukrainian conflict. It also did not expect that Russia would be able to attract so many allies to its side.
“It’s North Korea, it’s China, and also countries in the global South. Even if these states only supply lighting for refrigerators, they can also be used for military purposes,” the German general believes.
On December 26, 2023 Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said that the Russian defense industry multiplied the production of the weapons, which was most demanded in the zone of Russia’s special military operation.
