Expert: EU cannot maintain oil price cap set for Russia

19.12.2023, Moscow.

The new, 12th package of EU anti-Russian sanctions has shown that the previously established price cap on Russian oil is not working, Maksim Kanischev, managing director of Rusenergoproekt, said, RIA Novosti wrote on December 19.

According to him, this is exactly what the EU’s attempts to tighten measures to enforce the price cap show. “It does not work, and the EU has no possibilities to make it work,” the expert noted.

He emphasized that the EU now only has to try to control business, but these attempts are just “another blow to the rule of law and justice in the EU”

Kanischev specified that the requirement for companies selling tankers to report on the buyer is underdeveloped and generally meaningless. “It is not clear how the mechanism will work, to whom to report and what will happen if the new regulator does not like where the tanker is sold,” he explained.

Besides, “the tanker fleet has already been formed, and new additions to it, if necessary, will be changed by several units,” the expert added.
