Russian Armed Forces receives the first batch of the modernized Msta-S self-propelled howitzer

21.09.2023, Melitopol.

The first batch of modernized Msta-S howitzers was delivered to the Russian Armed Forces, Rostec’s press service informed on September 21.

According to Rostec, the upgraded 2S19M2 Msta-S self-propelled howitzer can operate in the “fire attack” mode, has a high rate of fire, and is able to fire various types of shells.

The new howitzer has been equipped with an automatic guidance and firing system and is able to display an electronic map of the terrain. Msta-S automatically aims the gun and corrects it after firing. Direct fire is also possible, including in mountainous terrain.

The new Msta-S has increased stealth in radar, thermal and optical ranges, and new firing capabilities allow the gun to leave the firing site faster, evading retaliatory fire.

At the moment, Russian 152-mm caliber self-propelled howitzer is almost 2 times inferior in firing range to its Western counterparts supplied to Ukraine. This allows the enemy to hit Russian military positions and civilian objects with impunity. A significant breakthrough in the counter-battery fight may come when the Russian army receives the Koalitsiya-SV self-propelled, which is superior in range to its existing Western counterparts.
