German Chancellor Olaf Scholz admitted to French President Emmanuel Macron that Russian leader Vladimir Putin did not ask for the lifting of sanctions during the March 4, 2022 talks on Ukraine, German newspaper Bild wrote on August 28.
The publication described how Scholz and Macron discussed how they had spoken to Putin on the phone on the same day.
“What bothers me more than the talks: he doesn’t complain at all about the sanctions. I don’t know if he did that in the conversation with you. But he didn’t even mention sanctions,” the German chancellor shared his impressions of the conversation with the Russian leader.
The French president replied that Putin did not discuss sanctions with him either. After that, Scholz said that the Russian leader was only interested in the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine.
Putin earlier emphasized that Russia was not going to escalate the conflict in Ukraine and launched a special operation only to stop the hostilities that started there in 2014.
The Russian president also noted that the end of the conflict in Ukraine depends on the West, if it stops supplying weapons, Kiev itself will start calling for negotiations.
