A solemn ceremony of laying flowers in honor of the 97th birthday anniversary of the legendary revolutionary leader Fidel Castro was held in Moscow on the square of the same name. A Rossa Primavera News Agency correspondent attended the ceremony.
Exactly 97 years ago, on August 13 in Cuba in the village of Biran (Olguin province) near the key Cuban city of Santiago de Cuba, a man was born who later became the leader of the Cuban revolution and led the country for 49 years.
On the birthday of the great leader of the Cuban revolution, a flower-laying ceremony was held in Moscow at Fidel Castro’s monument. It was attended by the staff of the Cuban Embassy in Russia, Russian deputies, the creators of the monument, representatives of various public organizations, political movements, and many ordinary people from Russia, Cuba and other countries.
The ceremony was held at this location for the first time, as the monument in Fidel Castro Square was unveiled only last year. Previously, flowers were laid in the neighboring Square of Divisions of the Moscow People’s Militia due to the fact that the small size of Fidel Castro Square contained nothing but a smoothly mowed lawn (in summer) and a snow-covered area (in winter) in an open area surrounded on all sides by a highway.
The inauguration of the monument in November 2022 in this square, with the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, allowed such ceremonies to be held directly in the square itself.
Marcos Félix Lazo Viltres, Deputy Ambassador of Cuba to Russia and Political Adviser, addressed the audience. He thanked all those present and said that the event was a recognition that Fidel Castro’s cause was not forgotten in Russia.
A member of the Association of Veterans of the Caribbean Crisis, military attaché in Spain, Cuba, Malaysia, retired Air Force Major General Mikhail Makarchuk addressed the audience, expressing gratitude to fate for the eight years of service spent in Cuba.
Officer of the Cuban intelligence service and the Hero of the Republic of Cuba Antonio Guerrero honored the memory of Fidel Castro. The intelligence officer was convicted in the United States in the Cuban Five case and spent about 16 years in a US prison. Guerrero was released early due to the resumption of US-Cuban diplomatic relations in 2014.
Many people attended the ceremony. They brought flowers and saluted the memory of the legendary leader.
There was a special atmosphere of a meeting of like-minded people, who did not hurry to leave and talked to each other for a long time after the ceremony. As one of the speakers said, the figure of Fidel unites around him organizations of different views, which in ordinary life cannot find a common language.
