Kurginyan: Russia must learn its lessons from the defeat in WWI

11.07.2023, Moscow.

Russia has two most important historic lessons to learn from: its Victory in the Great Patriotic War, and its defeat in WWI, said philosopher, political scientist, the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on June 23 in the program Conversation with a Sage on Zvezda radio station.

Today, we must “build tomorrow’s society” slowly and patiently, noted the political scientist.  At the same time, according to him, Russia must learn lessons from the experience in two wars.

Speaking about the reasons why Russia lost WWI, Kurginyan recalled that it was not the Bolsheviks who destroyed the monarchy.

“Lenin was an insignificant force in February 1917, if anyone demolished the Russian monarchy, it was the Cadets and other major parties; all these military-industrial committees, and political figure like Rodzianko and such, but then later, they were unable to build anything instead”, the political scientist recalled.

Kurginyan drew attention to the weakness of the Russian bourgeoisie at the beginning of the 20th century. In his opinion, today, a lesson should be learned about what this bourgeoisie has done in 1917.

“The big historic lesson to learn is when our Russian bourgeoisie, unlike the French bourgeoisie in 1789, takes power, as it did in February 1917, it is like a cow on ice, it does not know how to handle this power the way the French Legislative Assembly did in 1789, and then the Revolutionary Convention for the Salvation of France did. It doesn’t know how to do it,” said the political scientist.

He also noted that there was a major revolt against royal authority, known as the Fronde – the bourgeoise (Cadet and others), the monarchists (Union of the Russian people, etc.), the Army, and the Russian Royalty itself. This Fronde, according to the expert, attacked everything that the authorities did. And there was a society that was absolutely not ready for a total war and did not understand its meaning. At the same time, the country was only the sixth largest economy in the world.

In addition, analyzing the situation that developed then, the political scientist drew attention to the monstrous corruption and theft, as well as to the trouble in various areas, including in the army: “What was happening with transportation? What was happening in the countyside? And finally, what was happening in the trenches of war?”

At the same time, Kurginyan cited the Great Patriotic War as an example, where everything was completely different: the country had been preparing for it for 10 years, the population was homogeneous, united, there was no wholesale theft, the country’s economy was in second place and showed growth.

“There was a completely different situation, different fate – the question was – to be or not to be.  And the society was organized differently for such a scenario,” added Kurginyan

Speaking about today, Kurginyan stressed that today the main thing is that Russia is not divided into parts, and “so that our children and grandchildren do not end up burned in the fire of a nuclear war that is ready to start if Russia’s enemies will sense our weakness.”

The political scientist added that in Russia it is necessary to build an “organic Russian life”, which features collectivism, collegiality, community spirit. According to him, we are talking about a life “destined not for endless pleasure, not for gorging yourselves, but for something else, about what the greatest religious authorities of the world said – man does not live by mere bread alone.”

These are the lessons of the past: the lesson of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, and the lesson of defeat in WWI,” said the leader of the Essence of Time movement.
