FSB prevents an attempt to smuggle a kilogram of cesium-137 from Russia

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) officers, together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, detained five people who tried to smugle one kilogram of radioactive cesium-137 from Russia, the FSB press service of the agency reported on June 23.

The Russian Federal Security Service specifies that the criminal group was detained during an attempt to buy cesium-137. A kilogram of the dangerous substance was valued at $3.5 million.

It is specified that the criminals intended to smuggle the cesium “from the territory of the Russian Federation for its use to the detriment of the Russian interests in the course of a special military operation.” The coordinator of the detainees was a citizen of Ukraine.

According to the FSB, the terrorists planned to use cesium-137 to discredit Russia through staged terrorist acts using weapons of mass destruction. The agency additionally reported that the detainees were confessing.
