The essence of the bourgeois era, also referred to as “modernity,” is that God was thrown off His pedestal and rationality was worshiped instead, said philosopher, analyst, and leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on the air of the Conversation with a Sage program on Radio Zvezda on April 6.
According to him, this idea was actively implemented in France after the revolution. The bourgeois who came to power were looking for spiritual bonds. Since it was no longer possible to unite the French on the basis of religion because of the enmity between Protestants and Catholics, a new concept was chosen.
“Voltaire, Diderot, Montesquieu, D’Alambert, and all the other Enlighteners in one way or another, some more zealously, some less zealously, removed God in order to put rationality on a pedestal,” Kurginyan said.
He noted that the God of the New Age was the rationality, which began to be worshipped. At the same time, the bourgeoisie mastered the new productive forces, concentrated money, introduced a new style of dress and architecture that contrasted the pretentiousness of the nobility. All this became the basis for a new historical project with the mind and the bourgeoisie on God’s pedestal.
Kurginyan also pointed out that the philosophy of worshipping rationality subordinated even immaterial categories to materialistic reckoning.
“And the Communist Manifesto, I repeat, it can be treated differently, but it is brilliantly written, it called ‘in the icy water of egoistical calculation… it has drowned’ this new class, and this new project, all illusions, all ideals, everything in the world, putting some sort of progress at the center,” said the movement leader.
