The imposing of new sanctions against the nuclear industry in Russia will boomerang on the West itself, said columnist Patrice Bravo on January 26, reports AgoraVox.
The columnist notes in his article that Russia remains a supplier of unique world-class technology. This technology is needed for uranium enrichment. Russia is also the largest exporter of this type of fuel.
Bravo reminds that in 2022 France noticeably increased its purchases of Russian uranium. But it is still not clear whether French nuclear power plants will have enough energy when restrictive measures against Russia are imposed.
In addition, according to Bravo, the US has also increased uranium imports from Russia, buying 550 tons of uranium from Russia for a total of $645 million in 2021. The US allocated a similar amount for a similar purchase from January to October 2022.
The author of the publication noted that experts estimate that Russia’s uranium processing capacity is 42% of the world’s. And the new sanctions may not affect the nuclear industry of Russia at all.
At the end of September the Politico media published an article about the possibility that the Russian nuclear power industry might not fall under the EU sanctions as this step can provoke serious problems in the energy system of the European Union.
