The Donetsk People’s Republic Ministry of State Security (MGB) managed to prevent a planned terrorist attack, MGB press officer Mikhail Popov said at a meeting with journalists on August 23.
The sabotage was supposed to take place during a referendum on the republic’s joining the Russian Federation. The saboteur was recruited by Ukrainian special services on the territory of the Czech Republic, but after his arrival on the territory of the DPR contacted the republic’s MGB.
“A Ukrainian citizen Yevgeniy Karpenko turned to the DPR Ministry of State Security and said that while working in the Czech Republic, he had been recruited by the Ukrainian special services. After his recruitment, he underwent training in firearms and mining. Upon completion of the training, the Ukrainian special services sent him to the territory of the DPR with the aim of committing a terrorist act at the time of the referendum on the republic’s accession to the Russian Federation,” said Popov.
DPR and LPR were recognized by Russia on February 21 this year. After the recognition, the republics expressed their desire to become part of the Russian Federation. Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko said that the appeal will be considered after the republics have held relevant referendums.
