There are at least four “volunteers” from Croatia among the militants blocked at the Azovstal enterprise in Mariupol, the Croatian newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija reported on April 21, citing its own sources.
“Our Tony from Dalmatia contacted me three days ago, he is a squad leader in the [nationalist battalion] Azov (organization banned in Russia). He wrote me that he and three others were in the tunnels of Azovstal and that they had minimal ammunition… I haven’t heard from them since,” a former Croatian special forces officer, whose acquaintance now fights on the side of Ukrainian neo-Nazis in Mariupol, told the newspaper.
On 18 April, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said after a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky that his country would provide additional assistance to Ukraine, without disclosing any details.
According to information provided by the media, about 200 “volunteers” from Croatia went to fight on the side of the Kiev regime.
