Ukrainian neo-Nazis and other troops were not allowed to leave Mariupol via humanitarian corridors in order to put the surrendered fighters on trial and prevent Kiev from regrouping its forces in Donbass, doctor of military science Konstantin Sivkov told RIA Novosti correspondents on April 1.
The expert commented on why the decision was made not to give Ukrainian nationalists and the remnants of the Ukrainian army a corridor to exit the encircled Mariupol. Earlier this was announced by the representative of the DPR People’s Militia Eduard Basurin.
“Such a decision was made to prevent the surviving Ukrainian military and fighters of Azov (organization banned in Russia) to regroup and continue fighting in Donbass. In addition, those of them who want to surrender must be put on trial, so they must not be allowed to leave Mariupol,” Sivkov stressed.
Mariupol was considered the second-largest city in Donbass after Donetsk. In 2014, it was home to about 450,000 people.
Since 2014, the city had been under the control of Ukrainian nationalists and a neo-Nazi international from the Azov battalion (organization banned in the Russian Federation), which actively suppressed any signs of dissent and kept residents in fear.
During a special military operation to denazify Ukraine, the city became an arena of fierce combat.
Our troops surrounded Mariupol on March 7, after which a systematic mopping-up of the city from the Ukrainian Nazis began.
