Western countries are preparing to resume the war in northern Afghanistan, said Professor Aleksandr Knyazev, an expert on Central Asia and the Middle East, in an interview with Nezavisimaya Gazeta. The article was published on March 17 on the newspaper’s website.
“There are predictions that in the near future – if this is not already happening – Western countries may pour money into the so-called anti-Taliban forces to destabilize the situation primarily in northern Afghanistan, in order to maintain a fairly high level of conflict in that country. In simple words, to renew the war,” the newspaper quotes Knyazev.
In this case, Tajikistan will face an influx of refugees, warned Knyazev. This, in turn, will explode the already tense situation in Tajikistan. The COVI-19 crisis, during which a large number of Tajiks have lost their jobs in Russia, will also be superimposed on this.
“The task of the West is to complicate the situation in Tajikistan through Afghanistan, given the rather open borders in the Central Asian region. This is Russia’s region of responsibility, and it is, if not a ‘second front,’ a point of diversion of Russian resources to stabilize the region, which can directly affect the stability and security in Russia itself,” Knyazev said.
The situation is also tense in Nagorno-Karabakh. On March 9-10, the Azerbaijani military fired mortars at the villages of Khamort and Khnushinak in the Askeran and Martuni districts. Local men are mobilizing in the militia, women and children have been evacuated.
