Washington is seeking to cut off European countries from Russian gas, said Syrian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Bashar Jaafari, RIA Novosti reports on March 1.
According to Jaafari, the United States had been developing a plan for blocking both branches of the Russian Nord Stream to Europe long before the beginning of the Russian special operation in Ukraine.
“The Americans were aimed against Nord Stream – 1 and Nord Stream 2, which provide Europe with Russian gas, before the events in Ukraine,” said the Deputy Minister.
Jaafari said that US President Joe Biden called the Qatari Emir in Washington in advance and “discussed with him the possibilities of Qatar to meet the needs of Europe in the provisions of gas if necessary.”
According to Jaafari, the West had a clear understanding of what it was doing by pushing the Ukrainian President to blow the situation in Ukraine. “This is why the Gas Exporting Countries Forum was conducted in Doha and then the Qatari Emir was called,” he said.
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees to recognize the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. On February 24, Russia’s special operation to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine began.
In response to the Russian special operation, the United States and the EU introduced economic sanctions against Russia. The certification of the Nord Stream – 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany was frozen.
