DPR People’s Militia’s troops have almost completed the blocking of Mariupol, according to an official statement of the Russian Defense Ministry of February 28.
In the early hours of February 24 Putin announced a special military operation to defend the people of Donbass and ensure peace enforcement of Ukraine.
More that one week ago, situation in Donbass dramatically escalated. The Ukrainian army targets the positions of the People’s Militia as well as town and villages using massive regular shelling along the entire frontline, and it deployed heavy equipment and artillery.
Several subversive attacks and assassination attempts against commanders of the People’s Militia have been made in the DPR and the LPR. In Lugansk, 2/3 of the people were left without gas supply after a pipeline was blown up. The Ukrainian army deliberately targets civilian infrastructure. In particular, in Lugansk, water supply was cut off after pipelines at a filtering station were damaged.
On February 18, the DPR and the LPR began the evacuation of civilians to Rostov region because of a real risk of a major military aggression from Kiev. Women, children, and elderly people evacuated first.
At the same time, the Western leaders falsely accused Russia of shelling the Donbas territory in order to blame it on the Ukrainian military.
In this context, President of Russia Vladimir Putin signed a decree to recognize the DPR and the LPR as requested by the leaders of the Republics. This decision faced a wave of indignation in the West.
However, since early November the West made groundless allegations that Russia was preparing invasion of Ukraine. The information campaign started with a number of articles in major Western outlets followed by statements made by top US and NATO officials.
In parallel, negotiations on mutual security guarantees between Russia, the USA, and NATO came to a standstill. According the Russian diplomats, this blocked any negotiations on other global security issues.
