Russian cannot prepare to a harsh confrontation with the USA and NATO and build pipelines to Europe at the same time, said philosopher, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan in The Meaning of the Game broadcast published on the movement’s YouTube channel.
In Russia, strategic problems of war and peace, including managing tension between Ukraine and Russia, are the responsibility not of elite groups or certain agencies, but of President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, the political scientist indicated.
Therefore, if the Duma faction of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) proposes recognition of the People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, and it receives support from the Duma, this cannot be their own initiative, but it has to be a policy coordinated with the national leader’s plans.
“I do not want to say that <…> this is about recognizing these two unrecognized republics that I love, but it is about certain process taking place in quite a hidden mode at the top level,” Kurginyan stressed.
Speaking about the top-level process, he said that it was clear to everyone from the very beginning that the USA would refuse to provide any legally binding guarantees not to expand NATO to the east.
“Is there anyone familiar with the matter at all who believes that there is any chance for the US to agree with the conditions Russia proposes? That it will not admit Ukraine to NATO?.. That it will sign anything?.. That it will restrict its activity in Eastern Europe etc.? Is there anyone like that?” the political scientist wonders.
This is why, Kurginyan concludes, the requirements are proposed “in order to be rejected, and then something will follow.”
Speaking about what can follow, the political scientist describes three scenarios.
“Three scenarios are discussed. The first one is that we simply recognize the LPR and the DPR. The second one is that we expand to some extent towards Mariupol etc. under the guise of this recognition and further excesses, so as to finally have a land connection with Crimea. And the third scenario is that we expand seriously up to Transdniestria taking the whole Black Sea part of Ukraine,” Kurginyan said.
He said that he would welcome any of these scenarios; however, the current Russian elite that makes decisions in the country is much more concerned about what is taking place around the pipelines, Nord Stream 2 and the one through Turkey.
“But if this elite is going to fight, why is it then building these pipelines to Europe? They will be cut immediately! And this has been said many times!” Kurginyan insists.
However, the Russian authorities simultaneously perform conflicting processes: they prepare to tough confrontation with the USA and NATO, and they build pipelines to Europe. However, pipelines should be directed to China for a tough confrontation with the USA and NATO.
“It is either peace and pipelines or war and pipelines going in the opposite direction. But it cannot be both at the same time,” the political scientist stressed.
