Washington may use Nord Stream-2 to force Berlin to join arms supplies to Ukraine, Fyodor Lukyanov, director of the scientific research at the Valdai International Discussion Club Foundation, said on January 23, RIA Novosti reported.
Lukyanov noted that the US had previously avoided putting excessive pressure on Germany, due to the fact that it is its main ally in Europe. In this regard, Washington even compromised with Berlin on Nord Stream-2, in which the German side is interested.
“I don’t exclude the possibility that Washington will resume manipulations with the Nord Stream-2, especially since there is almost a consensus in the Congress to block it. And the supplies (of arms – note by Rossa Primavera News Agency), let it be even symbolic, to Ukraine will be the next price that Berlin will have to pay for the launch of the pipeline,” Lukyanov said.
He added that due to the growing geopolitical tension around Ukraine, things could go “to a greater level of action“.
At the same time, from the military point of view, it does not matter whether Germany will supply arms to Ukraine or not. Supplies from Germany are important as a symbol of “unity among allies,” Lukyanov said.
It is worth mentioning that in addition to the United States and Great Britain, Ukraine is also supplied with arms by Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, France, Romania, Turkey, and Canada.
Earlier The Wall Street Journal quoted its sources saying that Berlin refused to supply weapons to Ukraine and did not approve to Estonia the transfer of German artillery to Kiev.
The construction of the Nord Stream – 2 pipeline is completely finished, at the end of December 2021, both strings of the pipeline were filled with gas and were ready to pump gas to Germany. The launch of the pipeline has been delayed by the lengthy certification process for the pipeline operator. The certification is carried out by the German regulator and the European Union.
