The situation in Syria is stabilized due to Russia starting its military operation, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Federal Press Conference in Berlin on August 28.
“Russia did not hesitate to respond to Assad’s call for help. This, of course, led to stabilization of the situation,” said Merkel.
She noted that at meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, she often discusses the issue of launching a political process in Syria with a wide national representation. The process never got started, stressed Merkel.
Conflict in Syria is not the only one and is not the most tragic one for her, emphasized the Chancellor. Armed clashes are taking place in Yemen, Libya and the Sahel zone, added Merkel.
On August 26, the Syrian Constitutional Committee held its meeting in Geneva, under the patronage of Russia, Iran and Turkey. UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen also attended the meeting. The meeting was held to discuss the ceasefire issues in the city of Idlib.
