Work on the modification of the Su-34 fighter-bomber will be completed by 2022, sources in the military-industrial complex announced on December 22, TASS reports.
“Research and development work is underway to create an upgraded version of the Su-34. The first prototype of the aircraft should be produced by 2022,” said the unnamed source.
As part of the announced modification, work will be carried out to replace the onboard radar, to update navigation systems, and to improve the instrument panels in the cockpit. After modification, the architecture of the cockpit will be “open” and suitable for the installation of the latest systems from other aircraft in it .
The Ministry of Defense raised the question of modifying the Su-34 in August after analyzing its combat use in Syria. In August, a contract was signed with Sukhoi Company to carry out the work.
The Su-34 is a multi-functional supersonic fighter-bomber capable of engaging both ground and air targets in the face of strong opposition from enemy air defense forces. It belongs to the “4++”generation. With its characteristics, the aircraft is capable of performing combat missions without the support of fighter aircraft.
The maximum range of the Su-34 is 4000 km. It is capable of reaching a flight speed of 1900 km/h and carrying a combat load of up to 8 tons.
The Su-34 was developed on the basis of the Su-27 and went into service in 2014. Su-34 has been used in the Russian aerospace forces’ operation in Syria since 2015.
