UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the formation of a constitutional committee for Syria, reports Reuters on September 23.
Negotiating the list of the constitutional committee members was “a long-awaited step in a stalled peace process”, said Guterres.
The committee will be convened in the coming weeks, added the UN Secretary-General. The UN sees the formation of the committee as the next step in an ongoing process of finding a political settlement in war torn Syria.
The decision to form a committee was made on January 30, 2018, in Sochi at the Syrian Congress of National Dialogue. According to the congress organizers, the committee has to include 50 representatives from the Syrian government, the opposition and civil society (150 people in total).
According to UN Security Council resolution No. 2254, which was adopted in 2015, one of the key conditions for the country’s peace process is the implementation of a constitutional reform. Committee members, jointly, will have to work out the draft of the reform.
