22.09.2019, Caracas.
Over thirteen million Venezuelans have signed a document declaring Venezuelans’ commitment to peace and national sovereignty, according to the President of the Republic Nicolás Maduro’s post of September 22 in his Twitter account.
“I appreciate the great anti-imperialistic mobilization of our people, who flooded the streets of Caracas in a beautiful act of love and patriotism in order to give 13 million 287 thousand and 742 signatures for peace and national sovereignty. From Venezuela, we are saying to the world: No to Trump!” Maduro wrote.
The signatures collected over 40 days are to be submitted to the UN General Secretary António Guterres.
The signature campaign stared in the Bolivarian republic on August 10, 2019, soon after the United States of America announced further sanctions against Venezuela.
According to the 2001 census, the Republic’s population was slightly above 23.2 million people.
Editorial comment
Support of such proportions cannot be secured by administrative pressure or by publicity measures, especially when the signatures are collected over just 40 days. It does not matter whether the signatures will be submitted to the UN. Having secured broad support among the people, Maduro has gained a wide range for political maneuver. Whether he will manage to use it now depends on his will and his team’s skills.
