The Russian language will never get the status of a regional language, even in Donbass, the Speaker of the Ukrainian parliament Andrey Parubiy said on July 1 at a meeting of the Coordination Board of parliamentary party leaders.
According to Parubiy, he was surprised when the head of the Presidential Executive Office Andrey Bogdan expressed the idea of returning the status of a regional language to the Russian language, despite the fact that the Ukrainian language has recently been granted the status of the exclusive official language. According to Parubiy, the 2012-2014 language act, which granted the regional status to the Russian language, was intended “to destroy the Ukrainian language.”
Pyotr Poroshenko signed the act on the exclusive use of the Ukrainian language in all sectors of life on May 15, 2019, having already lost the presidential elections.
Andrey Bogdan in his high-profile interview to RBK-Ukraine said that the Russian language could only be recognized as a regional language on the territories of the Lugansk and the Donetsk People’s Republics if they return to Ukrainian jurisdiction.
