Tripoli International Airport came under the control of Marshal Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA). This information was reported by a source close to LNA’s authorities on April 5, RIA Novosti reports.
Fighting around the airport of the Libyan capital continues at this time.
Earlier, the LNA’s spokesman Ahmed al-Mismari said that the units loyal to Haftar are attacking Tripoli from several directions, but they have not yet entered the city.
The media report that LNA units have yet to occupy the towns of Guryan and Surman on the southern approaches to Tripoli.
On April 4, Marshal Haftar ordered to start an offensive operation to free the capital of Libya from terrorists. In response, Fayez Sarraj, head of the pro-Western Government of National Accord, whose troops control the city, ordered to use military force if necessary.
The civil war in Libya has continued from the moment when Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and murdered in 2011. The eastern part of the country is controlled by an elected parliament allied with the army of Marshal Haftar. The western part of Libya and the capital of the country remain in the hands of units loyal to Fayez Sarraj, supported by the UN and the European Union.
