The Crimean referendum was the legitimate will of the people, said Silvia Demarest, a representative of the US Center for Civil Initiatives on September 6 during her visit to Crimea, RIA Novosti reports.
“I’m a lawyer by training. I understand that what happened in Crimea in 2014 was the legitimate will of the people and the expression of the legitimate right to self-determination, that everything was carried out within the framework of the law,” said Demarest.
Upon returning to the United States, Sylvia Demarest promises to tell her fellow citizens about the real situation in Crimea. According to her, Crimea is unlikely ever to become Ukrainian. In addition, Demarest noted human rights violations on the part of Kiev.
At the moment, representatives of the US Center for Civil Initiatives are visiting Crimea for three days. On the first day, the Americans came to Simferopol where they participated in breaking ground for of a walkway of friendship, visited an orphanage, and met with Crimean parliament members.
