Hua Chunying, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, reminded of how important the territorial integrity and sovereignty are in US-China relations commenting on the passage of US Navy ships through the Taiwan Strait, TASS reports on July 9.
Hua Chunying urged the US “abide by the one-China principle and the stipulations in the three China-US joint communiqués and prudently and properly handle the Taiwan-related issues, lest it should undermine China-US ties and the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” particularly pointing out that China was following closely the US Navy ships’ movements in the South China and East China Sea’s waters. Chinese Foreign Ministry representative stressed that territorial integrity and sovereignty are the most important issues in US-China relations.
Pentagon officials called the passage of two missile destroyers USS Mustin and USS Benfold through the Taiwan Strait a “routine transit” and claimed that the ships passed in the same way as they “have done […] for many years”.
The US-China relations are complicated by the US’ support of Taiwan, which has a complicated relationship with PRC after the end of the civil war in 1949 when China lost control of the island.
In February of 2018, the US Congress passed a law regarding travelling to Taiwan which was supported in March by allowing high-level US officials to visit Taiwan. In response, the Chinese media reported that China could retaliate to the US in “other areas of bilateral cooperation,” such as the issue of North Korea, the economy, or Iran’s nuclear program.
