Ukraine could only exist having a social contract as a basis, without which a state is impossible, the leader of Essence of Time, political scientist Sergey Kurginyan said on June 17 on the air of the Sunday Evening with Vladimir Solovyov TV program on the Russian Channel One.
“The Soviet Union created the Ukrainian state,” the political scientist reminded, pointing out that this was done with an excessive emphasis on Ukrainization. Also, the Ukrainian statehood, which the USSR created, was super-problematic because of the idea of building a greater Ukraine, Sergey Kurginyan said. “It was terribly problematic from the very beginning, because it could only exist relying on a great potential of interethnic reconciliation. ‘We tolerate these people, and they tolerate those…’ There were many various elements, all tolerating each other. A sort of an all-around tolerance. This was the social contract in Ukraine after the Soviet Union collapsed. […] What happened at the Maidan and afterwards was the destruction of the social contract, i.e. the foundation of the Constitution, something more important than the Constitution,” the political scientist explained.
An implicit social contract is the air without which state dies, he stressed. “What happened after you (Ukrainians ― Rossa Primavera News Agency) rushed into this Ukrainization was terrible, because that was how you began to destroy your state. It could exist based on this tolerance, on various [agreements]. Now it can not. And it [the state] has partially failed,” Kurginyan concluded.
The French thinker Jean-Jacques Rousseau main work is called The Social Contract. Thomas Hobbes and John Locke developed the theory of the social contract along with Rousseau. In particular, Locke said that people may revolt against their dictator in the event a dictatorship emerges. The social contract implies that citizens voluntarily and implicitly (in an informal manner) abandon some of their rights and freedoms in favor of the state. In return, the benefit from their coexistence.
The situation that resulted from the Maidan of 2014 is the dissolution of the social contract between the dissimilar parts: Crimea, Galicia, Malorossia and Novorossia. Westernists who performed the coup d’etat in Kiev actually announced a dictatorship over the residents of the other regions, and they called Russian-speaking people subhuman.
