The US State Department for the first time has recognized the use of chemical weapons by terrorists of the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham militant group associated with Jabhat al-Nusra (organization banned in Russia), Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said on October 20, RIA Novosti reports.
This information appeared on the official website of the State Department, explaining why American citizens should not travel to Syria.
“This is the first time the State Department, and I want to stress it, not only recognized the possession but the use of chemical weapons by the Jabhat al-Nusra (organization banned in Russia – Editor’s note) in this part of Syria to commit terrorist acts, whereof we warned multiple times and told about it at all levels,” Konashenkov said.
According to the Defense Ministry spokesman, “everything now falls into place“: Jabhat al-Nusra (organization banned in Russia) terrorist group acts in Idlib that “uses chemical weapons against civilians” and is associated with al-Qaida terrorist group (organization banned in Russia).
The United States and its allies have repeatedly accused Damascus of using chemical weapons and rejected any possibility of this type of weapons to be used by the opposition. The entire chemical arsenal of the Syrian army was removed from the country under the OPCW’s control, despite the fact that the Syrian authorities denied its use.
Editorial comment
The Kurds, under the sensitive patronage by the United States, are in the final stages of capturing the city of Raqqa. The few Islamists remaining there will soon be eliminated. Thus, now we have a real discussion that ISIL (organization banned in Russia) has been defeated in Syria. At the same time, the American NBC TV channel, citing the sources from the Trump administration, reported that Washington has no clear decision on what to do after the liberation of the city of Raqqa. They have to justify their presence in Syria. In this regard, the fact that Jabhat al-Nusra (organization banned in Russia), which controls large parts of the Idlib province, used chemical weapons could not have come at a better time.
It is worth noting that until now the American presence in Idlib has not been observed. At the same time, Turkey announced its entry into the province (although the promise was not fulfilled in full). So the interests of the Americans and the Turks may collide there. The US is not quite afraid to exacerbate relations with Turkey.
