The former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who is currently the Chairman of the Board at Rosneft, urged to lift sanctions between Russia and the EU on October 19 at the X Eurasian Economic Forum in Verona, TASS reports.
According to Schroeder, the US and the EU have different interests towards Russia. “I see that the US is interested in a weaker Russia. Europe and Germany, however, are interested in a prosperous Russia. There are two reasons: we need the market, especially Germany; and we need resources for our industry,” Schroeder said. He called the isolation of Russia dangerous and pointless.
The anti-Russian sanctions including scaling down co-operation in various fields were imposed by the EU, the US, and a number of other countries in March 2014 in connection with the Crimea’s reintegration into Russia and the civil war in Ukraine. The package of the anti-Russian sanctions has been extended several times. Russia imposed counter-sanctions in response to these unfriendly acts.
Despite great economic losses caused by the sanctions, the EU continues to support the US in keeping the imposed restrictions.
