On September 30, a strong ISIL (Islamic State – terrorist organization banned in Russia) attack was repelled by the troops of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR), Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports citing the sources in the city’s operations headquarters.
The agency quotes the said source, “The militants made an attempt to cut the road in the area of the town of Ash Shula situated between the cities of Deir ez-Zor and As-Suchna. As a result of heavy fighting, the terrorists suffered losses and retreated.”
The clear and hold operation against retreated militants is currently underway in the area.
The road connecting the cities of Deir ez-Zor and Palmyra is the most important supply route of the city. It serves to supply military and humanitarian aid, food, medicine and other cargoes. On September 5, 2017, the SAR army supported by the Russian Aerospace Forces managed to break the siege of Deir ez-Zor that lasted since September 2014. Right after the liberation of the city, the Syrian government army started an offensive operation against militants in the northern outskirts of the city.
