At present, rebel groups control no more than 15 percent of the Syrian territory, the Chief of Staff of Russian troops in Syria Lt.-Gen. Alexander Lapin informed, RIA News Agency reported on September 12. This totals to about 27,000 square kilometers of the territory of the Republic. The rest of Syria has been cleared from terrorists, Lapin informed.
The Chief of Staff added that ISIL and Jabhat al-Nusra (organizations banned in Russia) terrorists in Syria will be destroyed completely. Thanks to the actions of the Russian Aerospace Forces and the ongoing reconciliation activity of the warring parties, the war in Syria has witnessed a fundamental turn. In 2016, the largest city in Syria, Aleppo, was liberated from militants, and in recent days the siege of the town of Deir ez-Zor, the center of the province of the same name, which has been encircled by terrorists since 2014, was lifted.
