Slovakia’s former defense minister accused of state treason over MiG jets transfer to Kiev

12.06.2024, Bratislava.

An application on suspicion of state treason will be filed against former Slovak Defense Minister Jaroslav Nadja over the transfer of MiG-29s to Ukraine, acting minister Robert Kaliniak told reporters on June 12.

“Of course, the Ministry of Defense will file an application” to law enforcement authorities, the minister said.

Kaliniak emphasized that the decision weakened the country’s armed forces, which violated Slovakia’s constitution. He noted that it could not be called other than treason.

The minister recalled that the country had not received any compensation for transferring fighter jets. There were no replacements for the aircraft, and the country was left without any fighter aircraft at all.

In December 2022, the Parliament passed a vote of no confidence in the government, but its head continued to fulfill his duties. In March next year, it handed over to Ukraine 13 MiG-29 fighter jets and part of the Kub air defense systems that were in service.

On June 11, the Slovak secretary of state said that the fighter jets had been transferred illegally. He noted that the government could not make principal decisions in the sphere of foreign policy on its own.

Transferring jets worth over 500 million euros to Kiev is among such decisions.
