Germany backs Trump’s demand to raise defense spending

15.05.2025, Ankara.

Germany supports US President Donald Trump’s demand that NATO member states increase their defense spending to 5% of GDP, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated on May 15, according to the dpa news agency.

“Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul publicly supported US President Donald Trump’s demand for a significant increase in defense spending by NATO member states to five percent of their gross domestic product,” the report said.

It is noted that Wadephul made this statement during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Turkey, following discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

In 2024, Germany’s GDP amounted to approximately $4.5 trillion. Therefore, allocating 5% of its budget to defense would equal $225 billion (18 trillion rubles).
