Turkish Media: Turkey will benefit from cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine

02.01.2024, Ankara.

Turkey’s significance as a supplier and transit hub for natural gas deliveries will increase following the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine, reports the newspaper Hürriyet on January 2.

“The situation between Russia and Ukraine will further strengthen Turkey’s position as a safe alternative. This is not only due to its geographical location but also because of Turkey’s existing gas infrastructure. Turkey has been extracting its own gas from the Black Sea for some time, and pipelines and floating facilities are available on its territory,” the publication states.

Experts believe that, besides the gas extracted in Turkey, there is potential to supply gas from other countries to Europe through Turkey.

As of January 1, the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine has been completely halted due to the expiration of the transit agreement.
