Kosovo “president” demands sanctions against Serbia

05.10.2023, Granada.

The “president” of the self-proclaimed republic of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani refused to resume negotiations between Pristina and Belgrade until the European Union, including Spain, imposes sanctions on Serbia and its president Aleksandar Vucic on October 5 at the European Political Community (EPC) summit.

Earlier, in early October, Croatian Prime Ministers Andrej Plenkovic and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama called on the EU to take action against Serbia over the September 24 clashes in northern Kosovo and Metohija and the reaction of Belgrade, which declared a one-day mourning period for the victims of the conflict.

Osmani is in Spain, where she is attending the European Political Community (EPC) summit. Spain, along with Slovakia, Romania, Greece and Cyprus, does not recognize Pristina’s self-proclaimed independence.

“I hope Spain will join other European countries and support measures against Serbia,” Kosovo’s “president” emphasized.

The Kosovo-Albanian “president” also said that she sees no point in resuming negotiations before sanctions are imposed against Vucic. First the sanctions, then we can discuss the rest, said the head of Kosovo.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic called on Serbs living in Kosovo and Metohija to defend their rights peacefully. He stressed that those killed in the north of the region on September 24 were Serbs, who, according to him, were brought to the conflict by the authorities in Pristina. All three Serb citizens who died in the clashes are considered “heroes and martyrs” among the Serb population of Kosovo and Metohija, according to Vucic.
