Kurginyan: Yeltsin destroyed the opportunity to build democracy in Russia

28.10.2021, Moscow.

By shelling the House of Soviets in 1993, Boris Yeltsin destroyed the possibility of building democracy in Russia, philosopher, political scientist, and leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan wrote in his article “Ends and means. To the 28th anniversary of the shelling of the House of the Soviets” published on October 6 in the Essence of Time newspaper.

“It was said initially that the very idea of justifying the means with reference to the goal was monstrous, and that it was an invention of the ‘horrible’ Stalin. Then it was said that this idea expressed the essence of true political pragmatism,” Kurginyan writes.

He noted that to understand the reason why Yeltsin decided to use tanks against the legitimately elected parliament, it is necessary to understand his goal.

“If the goal was to build a democratic society, and this was what was talked about, then Yeltsin and his team destroyed not their opponents with these tanks, but this goal. Once and for the entire foreseeable historical period,” Kurginyan explained.

The political scientist pointed out that Yeltsin’s actions corresponded to another goal – to retain power at any cost.

This is a very pragmatic approach. And we live in an era of frantic assertion of the priority of pragmatics over everything else. Sometimes it seems that if Machiavelli was resurrected and saw this triumph of pragmatism, he would make a helpless gesture and say, ‘Gentlemen, in The Prince I meant something that has nothing to do with your pragmatism without limits’!” the philosopher stressed.
