Kurginyan: NATO on Ukrainian territory is direct threat to Russia

25.06.2021, Moscow.

NATO will not yet expand onto Ukrainian territory in order to avoid provoking a conflict with Russia, political scientist, crisis analyst, and the leader of the Essence of Time social movement Sergey Kurginyan said on June 20 on the air of the Sunday Evening with Vladimir Solovyov on the Russia One channel.

The political scientist commented the outcome of the summit of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin and the President of the USA Joe Biden that took place on June 16 in Geneva. The summit was the first attempt to resolve the stalemate in the bilateral relations threatening to escalate into an actual conflict.

“Putin said absolutely unambiguously that they [the USA ― Rossa Primavera News Agency] called us the enemy, and they support all kinds of forces that undermine us from the inside and restrict us. In fact, Putin said again that we have talked to each other as enemies who want to have certain rules and certain resolution principles in their relations in order to avoid losing control of the situation,” Kurginyan believes.

The analyst reminded the words of the Russian president’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov that “we understood that they are ready to accept Ukraine to NATO, and we will react accordingly.” What will Russia’s reaction “accordingly” look like?

“Indeed, for us, the Ukrainian issue is an absolutely existential issue. We can concede absolutely nothing on this,” Sergey Kurginyan stressed.

The political scientist indicated that the summit revealed serious issues affecting Russia’s security, “which have not at all dissolved.” Global security must be not achieved at Russia’s expense.

“The discussion was really very much focused on the Ukrainian card, and it was said that if they really plan to accept Ukraine to NATO, they should seriously think what it would mean regarding the military forces. I think a pause is needed,” Kurginyan said.

The leader of Essence of Time explained that we can continue our dialogue with the USA on other issues of the global agenda: the Arctic, the Antarctic, climate, etc.
