Merkel and Hollande: Elections in Donbass are a threat to Minsk-2 Agreements

29.08.2015, Europe.

The Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and the President of France Francois Hollande have called the possible elections in Donetsk and Lugansk a threat to the Minsk process during their phone talk with the Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the official representative of Cabinet of Germany.

The sides “have discussed the progress of the political process in Ukraine corresponding to the Minsk agreements“, specifically, the “holding of regional elections in Ukraine in accordance with local legislation, OSCE standards and under control of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights“. The participation of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights in election monitoring will be discussed in the contact group, according to the official representative of Cabinet of Germany.

Earlier the head of Donetsk People’s Republic Aleksandr Zakharchenko has stated that the elections of heads of cities and regions of DPR will take place on October 18. He explained this with Ukraine’s decision to unilaterally adopt the law “On local elections” without coordinating it with LPR and DRP. The contents of the law, at the same time, “contradict the letter and spirit of the Minsk Agreements”, the head of the republic had noted.
