Opinion: Without an adequate assessment of the history of the USSR, the world will have no future

28.08.2022, Kishinyov.

The history of the Soviet Union is distorted, which hampers the progress and development of all countries, Moldovan historian and journalist Zurab Todua said on August 27 during the program Mechanism of Action with Elena Levitskaya-Pahomova on the NTV-Moldova TV channel.

“One of the main problems is that the history of the Soviet Union is quite distorted. If not to say – defamed. In fact, if there were a more or less sober view of what happened in the Soviet Union with all its pros and cons, it would be much easier to go forward and talk about the future of this or that country,” Todua said.

Now the subject of the history of the Soviet Union is strongly ideologized. The historical process is approached from the position of the victory of the West in the ideological war against the Soviet Union. This has led to a global conflict between East and West. Nobody knows how this conflict will end, the historian notes.

After Maia Sandu and her government came to power, a new wave of de-Russification and de-Sovietization started in Moldova. In particular, the Moldovan authorities banned the broadcasting of Russian news and analytical TV programs, banned Soviet and Russian films about the war, and banned the wearing and distribution of St. George’s ribbon.
