What does the CDU victory in North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany show?

18.05.2022, Moscow.

North Rhine-Westphalia is the most populous and one of the most industrialized regions in Germany. Therefore, it plays a key role in the political future of all parties in the country.

Usually the Christian Democrats win the elections in this land, which, however, was not guaranteed this time. In March 2022, the CDU had already disastrously lost an election in the traditionally loyal Saarland, losing first place to the SPD.

The victory of the Christian Democrats in North Rhine-Westphalia means their return to the big game after their defeat in the Bundestag elections in the fall of 2021. But even more successful were the Greens, who have in fact been given carte blanche to continue their policy of banning Russian energy resources.

And this happened against the backdrop of skyrocketing electricity, fuel, and food prices. According to calculations by the German newspaper B.Z., by the end of this year the average citizen of Germany will be paying 70% more for electricity and heating.

In fact, Germans have supported the policy of severing all economic ties between Germany and Russia and have agreed to the sharp deterioration in living standards that this severance will inevitably lead to. Against this background, Russian ambassador to Germany Sergey Nechayev’s hopes of a future launch of Nord Stream 2 are unlikely to come true.

The people of Germany are well aware of the consequences of the Green policy for the country and generally support it. Therefore, breaking economic ties between Germany and Russia is a strategic decision. Germany seems to have made its choice.
