Kurginyan: Russian authorities should explain to people that the dissolution of the USSR was a mistake

15.05.2022, Moscow.

The country’s fate is making such a sharp turn that the Russian authorities must explain to the society: why the decision of moving to Europe, integrating with the West was made, and why it failed, said philosopher, political scientist, the leader of the Essence of Time movement  Sergey Kurginyan in an interview to the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio on May 12.

After failing to join Europe, Russia found itself in a situation of a fierce confrontation with the West, recalled the political scientist. The Russian elite had to think about how to survive, it began to show its teeth to the West. According to Kurginyan, first of all, the authorities need to explain to the society why the Soviet Union was dissolved, why they tried to make Russia into a “huge Denmark” for so many decades, and now it turned out that the entire course on integration with Europe was wrong.

According to Kurginyan, firstly, the Russian elite needs to explain itself to the society “in a human way”: “Without repenting, or blaming yourself, but it has to be done. And here, we don’t like to do it.” Kurginyan warned that such an explanation is critical during the times when Russia is going through such a sharp shift in policy.

And secondly, it needs to get rid of those principles, approaches and algorithms that were built into creating a Russian Denmark, stressed the political scientist.

In his opinion, it would be best if Russian President Vladimir Putin had a talk with the Russian society.

“Today, especially in this dangerous situation, I personally wish for the current president himself to do this. He, who is in a great danger himself, who takes full responsibility and all, as they say in such cases, karma for this shift – so let him carry it out to the end. Here, I see something different, hybrid, palliative,” said the political scientist.

Kurginyan gave a historical example, when Joseph Stalin, being the head of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (Bolsheviks), C.P.S.U. (B.), completely got rid of the Trotskyist approaches to the country’s development strategy.

At the same time, the political scientist pointed out that the existing system can withstand the current pressure. “And to say: ‘Oh, this is all bad, let’s create something else in three days,’ only a madman can. The economy is here. This society is here. This elite is here. And it’s a fact, it has to be reckoned with,” said Kurginyan. However, since the pressure is increasing, Russia can survive only if it changes all spheres of its being.
