The display of the “Z” symbol will become a criminal offense in Lower Saxony and Bavaria, Tagesschau news service reported on March 25.
According to the ruling of the Ministry of the Interior of Lower Saxony, the “Z” sign quickly became a symbol of support for Russia, so its use in demonstrations and its public distribution may constitute a criminal offense.
Anyone who publicly displays the “Z” sign in Bavaria also faces criminal consequences. According to Bavarian Justice Minister Georg Eisenreich (CSU), the Bavarian Prosecutor’s Office has taken consistent measures against people who publicly endorse Russia’s special operation in Ukraine.
Eisenreich stressed that the Bavarian judiciary is closely monitoring the situation and added that, “in Germany everyone is allowed to express his or her opinion. But freedom of opinion ends where criminal law begins.”
