Lavrov: Majority of evacuees from Mariupol chose to go to Russia

17.03.2022, Moscow.

The vast majority of those evacuated from Mariupol chose routes to Russia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters on March 17 after talks with his UAE counterpart Abdullah Al Nahyan.

The foreign minister said that 33,000 residents of Mariupol were evacuated on March 16. “The vast majority chose routes leading to the Russian Federation,” Lavrov noted.

The minister called this an important development after many days of Ukrainian authorities’ unwillingness to cooperate on evacuating people.

The Russian diplomatic chief briefed his UAE counterpart on the progress of Ukraine’s demilitarization and denazification operation and the delivery of emergency aid to its residents.
